At the end of 2016, we held another of our Construction Roundtables. These events have proved invaluable to us in terms of shining light on the real-life experience of business leaders in construction and supporting services across the North. The Christmas drinks afterwards were pretty good too!
It was in October of 2016 that Mark Farmer published his review of the construction industry. The review was the result of a request from the government to the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) to look at:
- The labour model in the construction industry
- The skills pressures and other constraints that limit housebuilding and infrastructure development in the UK.
We based our discussion on the main outcomes of the review (summarised in the attached whitepaper) inviting our attendees to agree, disagree and share their opinion.
In short, our attendees seemed to land at a far more positive conclusion than Farmer’s ‘Modernise or die”, seeing the need for ‘tweaks’ in the industry rather than a complete overhaul. Do you have an opinion to add to this? Is your experience of the industry one of frustration or are you hopeful about the future? Perhaps the crises the industry now faces are the ones that be the catalyst to turn things around? We’d love to hear your thoughts. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch through the website or our Twitter.
We are provisionally planning our next Construction Roundtable in May 2017 where the focus will be around smart cities. If you’d like to attend and contribute your insights to the meeting, please email marianna@kaleida.co.uk
Finally, we’d like to thank all our attendees for their contributions to the meeting.
